La Petite Mort
LPM Ballanolo 2014
2014 La Petite Mort Ballanolo (Nebbiolo) is a relatively new variety for the Granite Belt so we're still waiting to see how and indeed if Nebbiolo fits in our close knit community. Hailing from the north of Italy where is it responsible for Barolo the King of Italian wines, we have rather big shoes to fill as we try to grow and vinify it here in sunny Queensland! Nebbiolo is known as "the wine of tar and roses" and at its best it offers a nose of rose petals, violets and maraschino cherries so lifted that it is positively ethereal. Yet it also has a dark side exhibiting tar, tobacco, molasses, leather, turned earth and black truffles with a structure to challenge Bordeaux and acidity that makes German Riesling look tame. ...Our 2014 LPM Neb has bright red amarelle sour cherries, lifted by a great whack of juicy acidity and held up by firm, young tannins and although the tar and tobacco aren't quite speaking up yet, the wine is amazing with rich cured meat or game and the red fruit flavours are a brilliant match with hot chilies. Spicy wild boar sausages anyone? Unusual, confronting and a little left of the middle. La Petite Mort (LPM) is the home of our 'other' wines. These small batch, experimental wines are produced with minimal wine making intervention and put into bottle without filtering or fining to allow the raw essence of our experimentation to shine through. Rustic and characterful, LPM wines promise a unique sensory experience and a story behind every label.
